On 10 October 2010 students everywhere got to work to save energy and reduce emissions.

From tree-planting in Edinburgh to permaculture workshops in East Anglia, the People & Planet network sprang into action across the UK for the 10/10/10 Global Day of Doing. Students joined people at 7347 events in 188 countries in getting to work on the climate crisis and delivering a strong message to world leaders.

“If we can roll up our sleeves to cut carbon emissions, so can you!”

Bangor Botanics

Members of Bangor University People & Planet joined a work party at Treborth Botanical Gardens. Nothing like getting your hands dirty, planting and clearing on a sunny Autumn day in North Wales!

Allotment Action

Over at Roehampton University students and staff held an allotment skillshare session open to all and helped to equip people with the skills to work towards a sustainable future.

The day featured an Interactive Carbon Calculator, Cycle-Geography, an Alternative Library book swap, stories and songs around a campdie and a live band Little Sister Blue.

They also hosted workshops a range of issues including:

  • One Day on Earth workshop on making a video about the environment, Alternative Energy to Irrigation

  • That’s not Rubbish! Gardening with Reusable Materials

  • Bedding down and preparing for Winter

Events like these can help kick-start your university into more sustainable thinking. Check out our Going Greener campaign for more information on helping to bring about a fair and fast low-carbon transition.

Joycott for the climate

One of our favourite carbon-cutting ideas, a low-carbon Carrotmob, was dreamed up by the Transition Edinburgh University team. Over the past few months, they invited Edinburgh pubs to place bids committing themselves to invest in energy-efficiency upgrades with the profits made on 10/10/10. The winning pub, The Mercat Bar, pledged to reinvest 20% of the additional revenues from the evening into energy efficiency retrofits and Edinburgh P&Pers headed there en masse on Sunday.

Low-Carbon Fair

Manchester Metropolitan’s People & Planet group joined forces with a number of local green groups, including Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, to put on a fab Low-Carbon Fair. They organised free veggie food, cycling workshops, a bicycle-powered smoothie maker, recycled craft workshops and much much more!

Fruit Picking

Like many others across the globe, People & Planet members in Durham went fruit-picking on Sunday. There is an abundance of free fruit on trees across the country which goes waste unless people pick it and use it. The Durham group intend to make all the delicious apples and other fruit they picked into jam with a further session later this month.
