Strategic Plan

Back to Management Committee.

Background

People & Planet has an office in Oxford which supports the vibrant, autonomous network of groups at sixth forms and universities throughout the UK. It does this so successfully by being led by the dedicated students campaigners involved, and guided by experienced and highly skilled staff, a Management Committee (over half of which is made of elected students), and Trustees.

It is important for organisations like People & Planet to be guided by a long term strategy, to ensure all our activities share the same goals and achieve the best world-changing impact as possible. It is especially important for us because we need to know how we can best support and develop our network, both now, and in the years ahead.

We have recently developed a six year Strategic Plan for 2007-2013 following on from our previous strategy, which ended in 2006. This process involved input from all the major groups of people who make up People & Planet.

Process

This is the process that was used in coming up with the 2007-13 strategy.

September — December 2005

Consultations with the network (Scotland, N.E. England and Oxford) as well as with the staff team and the Management Committee. Each group used a SWOT (Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis to examine the internal and external environment and identify key issues, concerns and aspirations.

January 2006

Management Team drew together the work done so far and identified six key questions: 1. How can we be more financially secure and independent? 2. How can we raise our public profile and what kind of profile would we like to develop? 3. Who should we try to include in the People and Planet network? 4. Responding to devolution — how can P&P work more effectively in Wales, Scotland and N.Ireland, whilst still maintaining a co-ordinated national campaigning network? 5. What are the principles and values that should underpin our organisation and activities? 6. How can we improve the impact and extent of our campaigning?

March 2006
