Poverty Aware Procurement on Campus
Promoting Poverty Aware Procurement on Campus (PPAPC) is an exciting project, funded by the Department for International Development (DfID), which aims to use university purchasing to reduce poverty, human rights abuses and to promote development in the Global South.
It has produced a range of materials that you can use to transform university purchasing into pro-poor purchasing.

The Higher Education sector spends £8 billion per year on procurement. That amount of buying power can make massive changes for the environment and society. Partially thanks to People & Planet’s Green League, many universities are now making leaps and bounds in cutting their carbon emissions, with most now employing Environmental Managers, and having sustainability policies.
But being sustainable is also about buying things in a way that is pro-poor and pro-human rights. Universities have recognised this by gaining Fairtrade Status and selling Fairtrade tea, coffee and snacks on campus.
Now it’s time to go beyond Fairtrade by putting development and human rights at the heart of everything universities buy, even where a Fairtrade option isn’t available. It is now possible to do this, thanks to the Environmental Association for Universities and Colleges(EAUC) project called Promoting Poverty Aware Procurement on Campus (PPAPC).
Students and Procurement Managers involved in this ground-breaking project have split everything universities buy into 14 categories, and produced an Information Sheet for each one showing how to buy products in a way that reduces poverty in the Global South, and supports human rights.
