New Corporate Power campaign

It’s time to put people and the planet before profit.

The unaccountable power of corporations drives policies that keep the poor poor, degrade our environment, abuse human rights and undermine democracy. Take back control with People & Planet’s new campaign to challenge corporate power, launching in November 2009.

Buy Right

The higher education sector spends £8 billion a year buying the goods that student and staff use day-to-day on campus. Often this money is spent on contracts with big companies who have appalling records of human rights abuses in their supply chains.

We have the tools at our universities to protect and respect human rights, in the global supply chains of the things we use every day. But it will take a new kind of campaign, one that allows students, universities and people in developing countries to join together in defence of human rights and sustainable development. The Buy Right campaign shows you how.

Wear Fair!

The school clothing market is worth £1 billion per year. Colleges buy tens of millions per year buying clothes for their sports teams, staff and vocational courses. But usually these garments are not Fairtrade cotton, and have often been produced by children, or by women barely older than you, for as low as 5p per hour for an 80 hour week.

Young people don’t want their schools and colleges to be full of clothes that make poor producers suffer. We need to tell our schools, colleges, high street shops and supermarkets to Wear Fair!

Reclaim Research

Higher education in the UK is a powerful force intellectually and financially. At the moment it is complicit in human rights abuses, environmental destruction and perpetuating poverty through its procurement and research relationships with companies acting in an irresponsible way.

There is currently a massive missed opportunity for higher education to pioneer new models of operating and innovating in a way that is socially and environmentally beneficial, not just for corporate profit. Come November 2009, People & Planet will tackle this with our new campaign to reclaim research

Climate Change Campaigning

Climate change is happening now, and its effects will be felt by all of us.

Wealthy nations like Britain are responsible for producing 80% of the greenhouse gases which drive climate change. The ever increasing impacts are global, threatening the lives and livelihoods of millions. Most at risk will be many of the world’s most vulnerable people in developing countries.
