Will it cost me more?
No. Typically it will cost nothing more, because Ecotricity promise to match the standard price of regional suppliers for their ‘brown’ electricity across the UK. Most people are still with their regional supplier so switching to Ecotricity won’t cost a penny more. If you’ve switched to a cheaper deal though, it may cost a little more – they can’t price match the price cutters and keep building new sources of green energy.
Will switching really make a difference?
Yes. Changing the way we make our electricity is one of the biggest things we can do to fight climate change, because conventional, or ‘brown’, electricity is the biggest single cause of climate change in the UK – responsible for over 30% of our CO2 emissions. Switching to Ecotricity will support the UK’s transition towards low-carbon renewable sources of energy. Over the last seven years they’ve spent an average of 70p from every pound of customers’ bills on creating new sources of green energy. No other energy supplier has spent more per customer.
Which tariff should I choose?
People & Planet recommends Ecotricity’s 100% renewable New Energy Plus tariff. It comes at a small premium, only around £20 more per household per year, because it’s topped up with green energy that they have to buy in. There’s not enough renewable energy to go round yet (the UK only has 6.6% renewables), so it costs a little more but it’s the only way to ensure you’re not powering your home with the fossil fuels that cause climate change.
