The Can Film Festival

For Go Green Week 2012 People & Planet have teamed up with Every Can Counts to run the Can Film Festival, which offers film-goers the chance to see a film simply by recycling empty drink cans.

Every year during Go Green Week, People & Planet groups organise film screenings as part of a programme of awareness raising around climate change. We’re teaming up with Every Can Counts to offer you the opportunity to put a twist on your events throughout February with support and resources to organise your very own Can Film Festival

Why?

We all know how important it is to recycle, and most people know that drinks cans are recyclable. Even so, of the 8 billion drinks cans sold in the UK every year around half still end up in landfill sites. By running a Can Film Show during Go Green Week 2011 you can communicate the value of these cans and encourage people to think again when they’re choosing what to do with their empties.

How will it work?

The basic idea is that instead of paying to see a film you promote the event as a Can Film Show and ask them to bring at least 10 empty drink cans along. At the Show you will collect empty cans at the door. These will be counted or weighed and after the event you can announce how much metal has been saved from landfill, and equate that to energy saving (e.g. the energy saved by recycling one aluminium drinks can is equivalent to that needed to manufacture 20 from raw materials).

Go Green Week 2012, from 6 - 12 February, will focus on driving positive behaviour change to reduce climate emissions during the week and beyond. From Meat-Free Monday, Travel-Light-Tuesday to Waste-Not Wednesday and Switch off Thursday, there will be plenty of opportunities to screen films and encouraging more recycling.

What is available to help with the event?

Every Can Counts can help by providing collection containers and publicity materials, including poster artwork, stickers and template press releases. All the resources you need to run your event will be available via our Go Green Week Resources page.

About Every Can Counts

Every Can Counts is a partnership between the European and UK drinks can manufacturing companies, the Waste & Resources Action Programme and the aluminium and steel packaging and recycling industries. It aims to encourage more recycling of the drinks cans that are used outside the home. Every Can Counts is working with the Degrees Cooler programme to help encourage more recycling on university campuses and student unions.
