Urgent appeals Round the world, right now, thousands of garment workers are fighting for their rights. The cases below are calls for solidarity from garment workers and their representatives who are persecuted, discriminated against, or lose their jobs because they have tried to organise to improve the conditions in which they work. By taking action on each case, you can help bring pressure to bear on the brands, suppliers and governments who have the ability and the responsibility to respect these workers' rights. Where abuses are found in a company's supply chain, we call on that company to put pressure on the supplier concerned to protect workers' rights, not to 'cut and run' by withdrawing its orders. Nov 6, 2008 Triumph Union Continues Fight for Fairness Tell Triumph to Stop Sitting on the Sidelines!

The workers at Body Fashion Thailand (BFT), Triumph International's Thai subsidiary, are responsible for sewing the underwear and bras that bear Triumph's name. They are proud of their work-and their union. So when their union president, Jitra Kotshadej, was unfairly dismissed in July, they went on strike to demand justice. While Ms. Kotshadej awaits a hearing of her case in court, members of the Triumph International Thailand Labour Union went back to work. But now they're fighting against the management's attempt to limit union rights and discriminate against union members. The union and the CCC have repeatedly called on Triumph International to take an active role to ensure that Body Fashion Thailand respects international labour standards, fundamental human rights, and Triumph International's own Code of Conduct. But Triumph International continues to sit on the sidelines while relations at the factory turn sour.

Read more of this articleTake action now Nov 18, 2008 Turkey: A UNION IS A RIGHT - NOT A LUXURY Anyone considering buying a leather bag or pair of gloves from designer brands Prada, Mulberry, Louis Vuitton, Aspinals of London and Samsonite could be forgiven for assuming that paying such high prices might mean avoiding the exploitation and abuse for which high street fashion is renowned.

However, as Turkish workers at the DESA factory in Turkey could tell you, the reality is very different. Long hours, low wages and appalling conditions are the norm and for the last six months the factory has been running a campaign of harassment and intimidation against the union they formed to stand up for their rights.

Read more of this articleTake action now Dec 17, 2008 More Action Needed to Protect Philippine Labour Organisers Since we reported on the arrest of labour lawyer Remigio Saladero on October 23, 2008, the Philippine authorities have issued arrest warrants for 71 other labour and human rights activists.

They are being accused of murder and attempted murder for allegedly taking up arms against the government and attacking police forces in an ambush in Mindoro province in March 2006. The accusations are based on a statement of one witness whose testimony is highly questionable and no investigation has taken place. Six activists have already been arrested and the others may be seized by the military police at any moment. Take action today and demand an end to the persecution of labour and human rights activists in the Philippines!

July 26, 2008Euro 2008 Supplier Gets Red Card for Workers' Rights
In the month before football players from 16 European nations kicked the ball over the line, 52 workers in Turkey learned about the other side of the Euro 2008 medal.   They worked for the factory Mink Tekstil in Konya, Turkey which produces Euro 2008 logo goods. In June 2006, almost the entire workforce of Mink Tekstil (90 Percent) joined the textile trade union Teksif. Although Teksif was granted bargaining rights at Mink Tekstil, factory management refused to accept the union’s invitation to begin negotiations and instead launched an anti-union campaign, forcing workers to resign from the union under threats of dismissal, pay cuts, the conclusion of ‘under the table’ payments and transfer to other locations. As a result of the pressure, eight union members resigned from union membership. The dozens of other union members who refused to resign were dismissed. In this context, Teksif ended up losing its majority and hence its bargaining rights.
