DFID reviews its plans for tackling overseas poverty, corruption and illness
30 June 2006
Why do we need a review now? It's to ask ourselves, and set out clearly, what part Britain's going to play in international development. How do we turn the commitments we made in 2005 to get more children in school, less mothers dying in childbirth, clean water to more people and reduce the number of deaths from tuberculosis, malaria and AIDS? Development takes many forms - aid, debt relief, improving conditions for trade - and we also work to tackle corruption, support education, protect people in disasters and support economic growth. This White Paper will set out what the UK Government will do with its partners over the next five years to achieve this.
Since January, DFID has been consulting on its new White Paper, which will be
published this July. The consultation was based around a series of
six speeches given by Hilary
Benn, the UK Secretary of State for International Development, as well as a
short consultation document
(61
kb). These raised a series of questions around a wide range of subjects
including trade, governance and growth on which DFID invited views. We have had
well over 600 responses from the public, Parliamentarians, academics, other
donor agencies and NGOs - in the UK and overseas. This consultation period has
now closed. Many thanks to all who contributed. Please refer back to this site
for updates on the new White Paper.
