ETI workshop

Day 1, morning:

Each of the nine ETI workshops focussed on one key ETI activity, highlighting the rationale, activities, strategy/approach, achievements, lessons and wider implications of each initiative. Participants had the opportunity to attend two ETI workshops over the course of the event.

1. UK gangmasters

This workshop provided information about how an alliance of business and trade unions successfully campaigned for new regulation to protect workers, and developed a code of practice and implementation process to drive up business standards in the sector.

2. Assessing our impact

This workshop provided information regarding the preliminary findings from our case studies in India, Vietnam, South Africa, UK, Costa Rica and China.

3. Homeworkers

This workshop highlighted the conditions of homeworkers involved in fabric embellishment (eg, embroidery) in India, and the guidelines we are developing for applying, monitoring and implementing the ETI Base Code with homeworkers.

4. Smallholders

This workshop provided information about the needs and priorities of smallholders and their workers in the tea and fresh produce supply chains in Kenya, and the guidelines we have developed for monitoring and implementing the ETI Base Code with smallholders.

5. Sri Lanka – testing auditing approaches

This workshop covered the information leaflets and training provided to workers as part of the project, and what lessons we have learnt from testing different audit approaches in the sector.

6. Assessing risk among suppliers – a toolkit

This workshop reported on the risk assessment framework and toolkit developed by this project, and important “do’s” and “don’ts” for using the methodology.

This workshop provided information on what the Group is doing to raise awareness about CSR and labour standards, and how they are setting up joint worker-management health and safety committees.
