Dr Piot reflects on 25 years of AIDS in Africa

“We can not predict the future but we can certainly influence it,” said UNAIDS Executive Director Dr Peter Piot looking ahead after his review of the past 25 years of AIDS in Africa. Dr Piot traced the history of the AIDS epidemic in Africa over the past quarter century and highlighted some key milestones in the response during a plenary session at ICASA on Thursday. Read more

Reporting HIV estimates

This year it has been decided to not publish a new “AIDS Epidemic Update” in 2008. Instead UNAIDS/WHO plan to publish an AIDS Epidemic Update in 2009 that will report on 2008 estimates, incorporating the 2008 programme coverage data.

New tool to improve coordination of AIDS technical support

In order to further improve the coordination of technical support provided to countries, UNAIDS and its partners have developed a new tool in the form of a shared database.

UNGASS 2008: Country progress reports

In compliance with the Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS signed in June 2001, as of 7 March 2008, 147 countries have submitted their country progress reports to UNAIDS.

NEW UNAIDS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR APPOINTED
On World AIDS Day the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has appointed Mr Michel Sidibé as the next Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). Mr Sidibé will take up his new position on 1 January 2009.
