With unfair trade rules and giant companies squeezing poor farmers in the developing world out of business and into further poverty, now is a vital time to stand up and say “we won’t stand for unfair trade”.
Fairtrade fortnight, from 23rd of February to 8th March 2009 will be a nationwide fortnight of events so that people can campaign for fair and just trade whilst having fun and raising awareness too! It’s the perfect moment to get the whole school or college involved. We’ll be producing a guide full of great ideas but to set you going we’ve set out three steps for a brilliant couple of weeks.
P&Per Gorilla Sophs sponsored fun run
Step One. Go Bananas!
Nationwide, 12.00 Friday 6 March - 12.00 Saturday 7 March
Become a record breaker and make your school or college go yellow.
This fairtrade fortnight we’re wanting to break the world record for bannana eating and we need you to join in. We need you to get as many students as possible to join the first ever Fairtrade world record, of getting as many people across the whole country to eat a Fairtrade banana at the same time.
Can we get a million people together to have fun and make a giant statement at the same time, and get into the Guinness Book of Records? Make sure you get the local media to come along, or call us and we’ll help you to do that. Register your attempt here
On the same day or anytime in Fairtrade fortnight organise a a dress in yellow day. Not only will this be a brilliant way of raising awareness in your school or college of Fairtrade, but by asking all students to donate a pound or two it’s a great way of raising money for People & Planet, to fund our campaigning for Fairtrade and trade justice.
Step Two. Take action!
Fairtrade bananas
Taking action locally is vital too so we’ll have Fairtrade Fortnight 2009 Stock It Cards for students to sign. These are a great way of telling your school or college that you don’t want to contribute to the unfair trade problem, you want to be part of the solution! If your school or college switches to stocking Fairtrade food and drink, or Fairtrade cotton uniforms then people in the developing world will benefit directly rather than making selfish companies even richer!

Step 3. Act as a group!
Put on a fairtrade film screening which show the human cost of unfair trade, and are fun and inspiring to watch too! We’ll let you know how to get hold of them soon.
Or if you’d prefer, put on a More Than A Label debate: Fairtrade is helping millions of poor farmers in developing countries, but are some big companies using it to ‘whitewash’ their otherwise unethical record? There are some great Fairtrade companies like Agrofair who do Oke Smoothies, Divine Chocolate and CaféDirect tea and coffee. They not just give poor farmers more money but are owned by the farmers, too giving them power and dignity. But a massive corporation like Nestle only has ONE Fairtrade product! What about the rest of its products?
Debate Whether or not big companies should be allowed the Fairtrade label.
And how better to continue the Fairtrade movement than in your own school or college, by campaigning for Fairtrade status? This means raising awareness in your community, stocking Fairtrade products and changing your school or college for good too! See our action guide for a step by step guide to making trade fairer in your own community.
