The Future of Go Green

For the past five years students running the Go Green campaign have been radically improving their universities’ environmental performance. But now lots of People & Planet groups have slam dunked the existing Go Green campaign demands, so students at The Forum will be deciding what new area of University eco-failures to address next.

Thanks to the input from the P&P network, meetings with green uni experts and our volunteer researchers we have got two exciting possible options.

Leicester’s Futuristic Vision of a Green Uni

Transition Universities

Around the country towns and villages are transitioning to a low carbon way of living through growing their own food, cutting energy use and creating a decentralised economy. These principles could be applied to create Transition Unis which demonstrate the benefits of local low energy living and teach us how to leave our oil addiction behind.

Carbon Management

The Go Green campaign has already been successful at helping Unis to cut their carbon, however, the existing Go Green campaign demands, are just the first step towards Universities drastically cutting their carbon. If universities are going to really clean up their act and be a shining example to other parts of society we need to see them setting ambitious carbon reduction targets of at least 5% a year, 40% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. By selecting this option People & Planet groups could be crucial in this important change.
