Fairtrade Universities

What is a Fairtrade University?

A University can be awarded Fairtrade Status by the Fairtrade Foundation if it fulfills the 5 Fairtrade goals: 1. Has a Fairtrade University Steering Group. 2. Has a written Fairtrade Policy. 3. Sells Fairtrade products in all outlets. 4. Uses Fairtrade products at internal meetings and events. 5. Campaigns for increased consumption of Fairtrade products on campus.

Since Oxford Brookes became the world’s first Fairtrade Universtiy in 2003, the campaign has been extremely successful:

  • By the end of 2003 2 UK Universities and Colleges were awarded Fairtrade Status.
  • By the end of 2004 there were 10 Fairtrade Universities and Colleges.
  • By the end of 2005 there were 22.
  • By the end of 2006 there were 40
  • By the end of 2007 there were 59
  • Now in 2008 there are over 70…..and we are still counting…

  • …. and in August this year UW Oshkosh, became the first US university to get Fairtrade status.

The Fairtrade Universities & Colleges Conference took place in Derby on 22nd April 2008, with nearly 100 students, teaching staff and catering staff attending. A lot of the discussions started at the conference are now continuing online, so if you would like to discuss Fairtrade campaigning at universities and colleges with other campaigners, join the Fairtrade Universities and Colleges Discussion Forum. Also, the conference is a great opportunity to network with other activists that want to see their unis go Fairtrade, so why not go in 2009?

If your university is on the list but there is not a link to a webpage, this is because the editors were unable to find a webpage. Please get your university to put the Faritrade Policy online, and then send an email with the link to the editors of this page: tradejustice@peopleandplanet.org
