  • Rosie Rawle
  • Tom Wragg

Take a look at what they had to say and their visions for People & Planet.

Well done to them and a big thank you to all who applied and voted.

Phoebe Cullingworth

What involvement have you had with People & Planet?

I have been actively involved with York University’s People & Planet society since my first term at Uni, supporting a range of campaigns and events. I was Chair of the group in my second year and count it as my most exciting part of Uni. During that year we held a successful Green Week, an Ethical Fashion Show, ran allotment tours and work parties, held a Global Poverty Project presentation and wrote a detailed Compost Proposal for our Uni amongst other things.

Do you have experience of income generation and fundraising?

I have taken part in fundraising pushes for our Student Food Co-op, SCOOP, when we first started in order to buy stock. We achieved this through gaining media attention, holding fayres and bake sales, selling homemade jam and plant seedlings and applying to grant and charity funds.

Do you have any finance, accounts or administration experience?

I am the treasurer of my own charity, Affecting Real Change, which runs volunteer trips abroad to construct income-generating projects for schools and orphanages. I have to keep on top of budgets, work out estimates for costs of projects and go through all the receipts and accounting regularly.

What would you bring to the organisation?

I am creative and enthusiastic, always thinking of new avenues to approach something from, which I think I demonstrated by running for our union Environment and Ethics officer because I had some new ideas. I love working in a group, sharing ideas and opinions to learn from each other. I am a reliable person, because when I am passionate about something I just can’t get enough!

What would be your vision for People & Planet?

I would love to see more Higher Institutions becoming aware of how respected People & Planet’s work is amongst students and the general public. For instance, my University dismisses the Green League as not a useful measure of its sustainability, where it should really use the findings for its benefit to develop effective strategies and targets towards improving its environmental responsibility.

Rosie Rawle

What involvement have you had with People & Planet?

During my gap year I worked with sixth forms in the midlands as a group support volunteer. I joined the People & Planet society at UEA last year and have been President this year. I am also a Regional Rep for the South East and Buy Right Rep.

Do you have experience of income generation and fundraising?

During sixth form I performed in street theatres in Cardiff for Amnesty International and GreenPeace. With 10 other students, I helped set up a community project building toilets in the Ngong Hills of Kenya. For this we had to raise funds during the year which included writing to potential sponsors and hosting music events. Since university I have fundraised with People & Planet for Fairtrade Fortnight and P&P itself. I also worked for the Workers Beer Company to raise funds for a local NGO, Bananalink.

Do you have any finance, accounts or administration experience?

Alongside helping manage the accounts of the fundraising events above, I have also been in charge of our UEA People & Planet budget this year. As a member of our university’s Societies Council, I am involved in deciding upon grant requests received from other societies.

What would you bring to the organisation?

I am a creative and enthusiastic individual, with particular experience in publicity and fundraising. The success of our Nearly Naked Action at UEA has inspired my interest in transferring skills from the arts and using new media techniques to create a movement. I have also had experience in formulating campaign strategies for primary and secondary schools wishing to achieve Fairtrade Status, sixth form groups starting up the Wear Fair campaign, and UEA People & Planet.

What would be your vision for People & Planet?

I think People & Planet has the potential to be an international network that reaches universities outside of the UK. I often hear about projects occurring at other unis across the world through people I met at United World College of the Atlantic. As so many schemes seem to have identical ideals (and sometimes structures) to People & Planet, I think the potential for sharing information and movement building is an exciting prospect.

Tom Wragg

What involvement have you had with People & Planet?

Involved in the society at Birmingham for the past two academic years - holding committee positions and dedicating significant amounts of time etc. Was involved in the Tar Sands-Free campaign this year, after visiting Alberta in the summer with People & Planet Tar Sands Youth Solidarity Exchange. I have organised the Go Green Week at the University of Birmingham - managing to get the tallest free-standing clocktower in the world to turn green for a night, and hold 10 events with the Uni, People & Planet, Oxfam and Conservation Volunteers. Challenged my personal tutor on his research into tar sands.

Do you have experience of income generation and fundraising?

I was involved in the Young Enterprise Competition when I was younger. Since I’ve been at Birmingham, I’ve raised over a thousand pounds for People & Planet with a haircut, marathon and Paris-Barcelona bike ride. Have dressed up as a bear and also a ghost from Pac-Man to raise funds for two other charities.

Do you have any finance, accounts or administration experience?

I was treasurer of People & Planet Society at Birmingham. Have to cost up some projects in my engineering degree. Can deal with admin fairly well through good organisational systems and lists.

What would you bring to the organisation?

Engineering background, presentation skills, team-work (sports, groups, societies etc.), report-writing, Tar Sands Youth Solidarity Exchange, computer literate, interest in alternative technology and design, sustainable energy, link with University of Birmingham, critical view of sci/tech industry influence on university research and curriculum, secretary for Engineers Without Borders Society, rep and social sec for Chemical Engineering Society. Winner of ‘vinspired National Awards: Bringing Communities Together award for the West Midlands’.

What would be your vision for People & Planet?

Putting out solid information about how much we need to change to create a sustainable future. Continuing to work closely with people in the Global South. Engaging local communities. Using the Green League to push for universities to become genuinely sustainable. Vibrant campaigns. Challenging the top, rebuilding from the bottom.
