What is Go Green Week?
Over the last few years many People & Planet groups have held Go Green Weeks in their universities, colleges and schools. These weeks have been hugely successful, providing an excellent focus for local campaigns, and putting sustained pressure on decision makers in those institutions. National Go Green Week will build on the success of previous Go Green Weeks whilst adding the energy and publicity of a nationwide event.
Groups across the country will be highlighting the serious and catastrophic consequences that climate chaos is already reaping on the world’s most vulnerable people and the future threat that it poses to all of us. The aim of the week is to create pressure for positive solutions to help avoid the worst impacts of climate change.
Groups will be raising awareness of the huge negative impact that our universities, colleges and schools are having on the climate. Universities, colleges and schools emit 12.3 million tonnes of CO₂ every year, not including the millions more emitted by people travelling to and from these institutions. Schools alone account for 15% of all public sector emissions whilst universities own 9% of all office space in the UK.
During the week groups will both reduce the carbon emissions of their institutions directly and through lobbying Vice Chancellors and Principals to systematically take action.
We want all groups to take action during this week to create a whirlwind of energy. If you can’t take action in this week, hold your Go Green Week as close to 16-24 February as possible. This will still add to the level of energy nationwide.
