Go Green Actions |
- The new group at Manchester Met planned out their campaign using the 4-step campaign plan in the Action Guide.
- Go Green stalls are being held on a weekly basis in the union to collect signatures and hand out eco-freebies such as water hippos and energy-saving lightbulbs.
- A meeting was held with the Vice-Chancellor to discuss the 4 Go Green demands
- The university is drawing up an Environmental Policy and the group are feeding into the draft policy. They are also involved in new building consultation on campus.
- The group designed and carried out a survey of students to find out more about their recycling and energy/water use habits. The results were used to convince the Vice-Chancellor that students are willing to engage in environmental issues if the university provides the right services and information to enable them to.
- Working with other local environmental groups and working very closely with their Energy Manager who has been key in helping with the campaign, getting contacts and generally being very encouraging.
- Future plans include: a zero emissions cafe, climate change talks for students and a Top Green Tips flyer.

Go Green Petition |
Over 400 signatures were collected within the first 3 weeks of holding Go Green stalls. The group are continuing to collect signatures at regular stalls in the union and using an online petition. So far over 1000 signatures have been collected and presented to the VC. |
Go Green Success |
The group have significantly raised the profile of environmental management at MMU, both with the senior management and with students. They have secured the support of the VC for a programme of environmental improvement and are now waiting to see words put into action. They also got a story published in the student newspaper about Go Green and in May’s words: ‘People are starting to catch on to the fact that we exist. This is a campaign where we can have a significant impact’ |
