Go Green Actions

  • SEED have held a series of Green Stalls to collect Go Green petitions and try to raise awareness of the campaign among other students and staff members alike.
  • A letter was sent to the VC making the Go Green demands and although the response was friendly, the four demands have not been addressed directly.
  • SEED helped organise an Environmental Week which included loads of exciting speakers, debates and film screenings. A Big Green Bonanza brought together lots of environmental organisations, representatives from local wildlife initiatives, local farmers and campaigning organisations for a big awareness raising day. The finale of Environment Week was a Big Switch Off where students and staff were encouraged to switch off unused appliances to demonstrate the amount of energy that could be saved!
  • Collaborating with other societies such as ArtSoc who helped produce a Go Green tree sculpture out of recycled materials which was then used to hang Go Green leaf petitions in the Union.
  • Using Environment Week to launch Go Green, SEED managed to get lots of publicity for the campaign and raise awareness of the issues by working closely with the SU Environment Officer.
  • Ongoing Go Green stalls on a weekly basis to continue collecting signatures and the group are also currently replying to their VC’s letter.

Go Green Petition

SEED designed a super petition which not only made the 4 Go Green demands, but also asked people to make personal pledges to reduce their environmental impacts. SEED members managed to obtain 500 free energy-saving lightbulbs from CRed to give out to petitioners and had one of the busiest stalls during Environment Week. They have collected approximately 1000 signatures so far.

Go Green Success

  • The Environmental Working Group (EWG) completely supports the aims of the Go Green campaign.
  • A group of MSc Students are conducting an Environmental Audit and writing an Environmental Policy to be reviewed at the next EWG meeting. Jenny says “This isnĀ“t a direct outcome of the Go Green campaign but there is not doubt that the campaign has raised the profile of the issues.”
  • After the policy the EWG are promising to seriously consider getting an Environmental Manager.
