As Henry Ford once said while wandering around the P&P office (maybe), “Before everything else, getting ready is the secret to success.”
- Plan when and where you’re going to hold it and how many people you want to come along
Try and fit it in with your Go Green Week activities. If you open it to the public you might need a lot of space like your union or uni canteen, or if you’re going to make it a more intimate affair, someone’s house or halls should be fine.
Other ways to raise money on the night
You can easily make even more money on the night if you throw a few little extras in. Why not try:
- selling drinks
- selling desserts and cakes
- holding a raffle
- having a pub quiz
- taking donations for a DVD screening
If you need any help doing any of these, get in touch with Louise in the Fundraising Team on 01865 245678.
- Plan your event budget
Keeping to a budget is really important when you’re raising money. Work out how much you need to spend (i.e. your expenditure). This could include ingredients, drinks, flyers, posters and possible venue hire. Then work out how much you anticipate making (i.e. your income). This may simply be the number of people who come along multiplied by the amount you will charge them. If you’re planning a pub quiz, fundraising games or a DVD screening, you should factor these in too. Your total income minus your expenditure is how much you reckon your event will raise. Hopefully it won’t be a negative number!
- Send out invites or publicise your night
You can use our customisable Go Green Week invites (coming soon) or make up your own. You could set up a Facebook event and if you’re spreading the message far and wide, get some posters up use your union’s website and newspaper.
- Get your Green Curry recipe
Yummy Curry
There are loads of recipes for Green Curry, but there’s only one made especially for People & Planet and that’s Allegra McEvedy’s special Go Green Curry recipe.
Think about whether anyone will be vegetarian or whether you could offer a meat option too. Use local, seasonal vegetables which in February includes broccoli, cabbage, carrot, celeriac, kale, leek, parsnip, sprouts, spinach and turnip. That way your meal will have less environmental impact and still be scrumptious.
- Divide up responsibility for ingredients, preparation, drinks, utensils and pots ‘n’ pans
If you share out the ingredient buying it makes it a lot easier for everyone and also more fun when you all bring your stuff along for the big cook-off. Don’t forget to sort out some big pots and pans, especially if you’re cooking for loads of people.

- On the day: get together early and get cooking
Don’t underestimate how long it’ll take to cook, especially if it’s for a big crowd, so get together early and make sure you’re not all flustered in the kitchen. Also, don’t make one poor soul slave over a hot stove for hours on end. Share out the cooking. One person could be in charge of the rice, while another sorts out the curry. Somebody else can be in charge of the naan and then of course there’s the all important drinks to wash it all down.
- Collect up the fivers and tell everyone where it’s going
Tell everyone a bit about P&P so they can see what a good cause their money is going to. This is where you can also try and recruit new members. Have some P&P materials around to talk about and maybe even do a little talk while everyone’s tucking in to the delicious curry.
- Show us the money
Once you’ve got your wodge of fivers together and emptied out the collection tins, take out the money you budgeted for costs then send the rest over to us. You can do it two ways. Either send a cheque made payable to ‘People & Planet’ and addressed to ‘We made a wodge of money on Green Curry Night’ to the address at the bottom of the page or use the online credit card donation form to magically transfer it. We’ll let you know we’ve got it and send you loads of praise. You might even appear on the homepage of our delightful website so let us know how it went and send us lovely photos. We love photos.
