Love is in the air this Go Green Week
Love Your Climate
8 -12 February
Its nearly here! People & Planet’s national week of student action on climate change in schools, colleges and universities.
You can help your school or college fall in love with the climate by holding some great events, cutting the carbon, and signing up to 10:10. Get inspired, download resources and get planning to cut the carbon during your Go Green Week 2010.
Why do Go Green Week?
P&P groups in schools, colleges and universities across the country get involved in Go Green Week for loads of reasons and here’s why your group should too.
1. It will help the Go Green campaign at your school or college
No matter what stage you’re at in your Go Green campaign, you can make Go Green Week directly relevant to your campaign. You could just be starting out and this could be the extravaganza you need to get it off the ground. Or you could be calling on your school or college to do something specific, such as sign the Go Green pledge, and Go Green Week would give you the chance to really get that message out to the rest of the students and, more importantly, your Headteacher or Principal.
2. You can get local media coverage to push your school/college into action
Headteachers and Principals react to the press. So get in contact with your local newspapers, radio stations, TV channels and websites (as well as the student newspaper if you have one) and let them know what you’re doing and why. They’ll be interested in your story as it’s about local residents (you guys) and your Head/Principal will have to sit up and take notice. Check out our guide to getting media coverage during Go Green Week.
3. You can get new members
Doing a big week of actions and events can’t fail to get you noticed by other students and some of them won’t have even known your P&P group exists. You can get them involved in the campaign, get them on your email lists and hopefully get them along to your next meeting.
4. You can raise loads of money
Every action and event can easily have some fun way of raising money for your group and People & Planet. It could simply be collecting donations or charging an entrance fee at events. Or why not put on a special event like the brilliant Green Curry Night which will raise money for P&P and is both easy and fun!
5. You’ll be part of a massive movement for change
With loads of actions and events happening across the UK, your activities will be part of a bigger student movement for change. Together we will be calling on the education sector to smarten up its act and get tougher on climate change.
6. National media coverage
We will be trying to get as much national media coverage as possible using your actions and events as the story. We want to highlight the huge impacts the education sector is having on climate change and we can only do that if we show them the groundswell of opinion coming from students across the country. You and your group might just get featured.
Is a whole week too much?
Why not hold a Go Green Day instead. If it’s between 8-12 February it’ll still be part of Go Green Week. If it’s your last week before half term you could hold your Go Green Day on that last day which would be just before Valentine’s. Perfect!
