Day of Action
Demand greenest government ever for education
This year, we’re asking the government to live up to its promise to become the greenest government ever and take urgent action to secure the education sector’s transition to a low-carbon, sustainable future that can create green jobs.
What can you do?
This will only work with your involvement! Together, we can create the energy and clear messaging needed to get the government to pay attention to this vital issue. This year, we have 3 ways that you can get involved:
1) Send e-action to demand greenest government ever
Help us spread the reach of our e-action and get thousands of staff & students calling for the government to commit to a greener education sector.
Brainstorm with your group how you can create an online media frenzy with the e-action! For example, use facebook, email lists, etc
Speak with your student union and ask if they would be willing to promote the e-action.
Have a laptop at your Go Green Week stalls, linked to the e-action. Promote it at your events.
Talk to your family and friends and get them to send the e-action!
2) Get your VC & Environment Manager on board
Request a meeting with your Environmental Manager and your Vice Chancellor to get their support for People & Planet’s Go Green Week demands. Use our template letter.
Ask them to pledge to sign the letter for a greener education sector to David Willetts and commit to joining the transition to a low-carbon future. The letter is included in the template letter for your VC.
Take a photo and [send to People & Planet](mailto:goinggreener@peopleandplanet.org!
3. Spell it Out
Spell out your own message calling for a green education sector with your bodies, a banner drop, t-shirts, cupcakes… however you want to spell out your message!
Take a picture or capture it on video! Send it to goinggreener@peopleandplanet.org and we’ll make sure it gets to David Willetts
Some suggestions
- Make a human banner by using people to form the shape of the letter and take a photo.
- Try some guerrilla gardening and arrange flowers in the shape of your letter or dig out a bare patch on your allotment ready to plant with veggies in the spring.
- Do some clean graffiti on a dirty pavement on campus.Make a large stencil out of card or plastic and use a pressure hose to remove the dirt
- Get everyone to bring their bikes to an empty car park and spell out a letter
- Collect rubbish (for example plastic bottles) from around your campus and construct a letter out of the waste!
- Gather scraps of material or clothes and sew together or cut out a giant letter
- Make a vegan cake in the shape of your letter, then use it to fundraise for P&P!
