Switch-Off Thursday
Ecotricity Competition!
People & Planet has teamed up with green energy suppliers Ecotricity for a special Go Green Week competition. Go Green Week, from 6 - 12 February, is the perfect opportunity to get students thinking about where their energy comes from - and switching to a renewable supplier.
The student group or team which gets the most people to switch to renewable energy by 24 February will win a case of Naked Wines. To enter your group, simply collect in the Ecotricity Go Green Week cards and return them to the People & Planet office by 24 February.
Every person who signs up to a renewable energy tariff using the special cards in your Go Green Week pack or using the competition website will be entered into a special draw to win a year’s free supply of electricity AND they’ll receive 4 free energy-efficient lightbulbs.
Just 50 sign-ups per university or college would mean a whopping 5000 new customers receiving clean, green renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.
Big Green Makeover Home visits - teach students and staff how to be sustainable in the home
Have an interactive display of renewable technology
Home electricity consumption accounts for roughly 1 tonne of carbon per person so imagine the impact that over 2 million students have collectively. Now imagine 2 million students driving forward the renewable energy revolution together!
Suggested activities for Switch off Thursday!
1) Run a Big Green Makeover Advice Clinic
This is a stall where you can offer students and staff lots of information and advice on energy and water saving in the home. Join the Ecotricity Go Green Week competition to get as many people to switch over to renewable energy as possible with prizes available for the group that gets the most!
Available to download: Pictures, Logos, Words, Flyer template, Poster template
Available to Order: Shower timers, leaflets on water saving, Ecotricity sign-up cards, Competition flyers to help people win an energy monitor, energy saving lightbulbs and one year’s supply of renewable electricity
2) Big Green Makeover Home Visits
Organise a group of volunteers to go and give Home Visits to students and staff who want to learn more about how to be more sustainable in the home. Make sure your volunteers know their stuff – there’s information in the Home Surveys provided in the downloadable pack. Set some time aside to talk through all the different eco-gadgets and how they work with Advice Clinic volunteers beforehand.
Available to download: Pictures, Logos, Words, Flyer template, Poster template, Home surveys, Water and Energy games pack (teaching tool)

Come up with your own ideas!
You can also come up with your own ideas for fun events. Other groups have put on a club night with a pedal-powered sound system to raise money for People & Planet, worked with student union bar and NUS Services to set up a ‘carrot mob’ scheme which devotes a percentage of profits of a particular drink into funding carbon reduction projects.
