Travel-Light Tuesday
Manchester Met students make cycling sexy!
Roehampton’s mass bike ride in 2010!
Go Car Share is a liftshare website especially for students!
Transport accounts for 40% of a university’s emissions. Use this day to set your transition travel projects in motion and promote low-carbon alternatives to cars and planes. What are you waiting for? On yer bike!
Suggested activities for Travel-Light Tuesday!
1) Hold a Green Travel Fair
Showcase environmentally-friendly holidays. Get your group to research and brainstorm green travel alternatives, local businesses and projects you could showcase. Check out Otesha (cycle tours that work to raise awareness of climate change etc), couchsurfing, woofing and working away websites, just to get you started… Then organise a venue for your fair with the union and your environmental manager.
2) Encourage people to join Go Car Share
Go Car Share is a ride share website that’s been created especially for students to help reduce car journeys. Also, check out Liftshare. Hold a stall where you can talk to students and staff and get them signed up on the website.
Available to download: Go Car Share Video
Available to order: Go Car Share colourful, handprinted Carbon neutral T- shirts and Bags
3) Hold a critical mass bike ride.
Critical Mass is a big bike ride involving a large group of people through the campus, the city centre or somewhere with lots of people around. The idea is to empower lots of people to cycle and to take the roads back from motorists! Get creative with your Go Green Week costumes and decorate your bikes to make a real impact - and why not try and get hold of a bike-powered sound system for some tunes along the way!
Come up with your own ideas!
You can also come up with your own ideas for fun events. Other groups have organised a bike auction with the university by reclaiming bikes abandoned on campus, held free bike maintenance workshops and cycle to work competitions. Warwick students challenged people to get to campus by bike, car and train in the shortest time and provided free breakfast to anyone who arrived by bike or public transport.
