Oxford Brookes is particularly proud of the work it has done on sustainable travel with its third sustainable travel plan being adopted in February 2011.

Progress in achieving sustainable transport targets set within Brookes’ 1999 and 2006 travel plans, has been monitored on a regular and ongoing basis. Taking all sites as a whole, walking has increased by 7 percentage points amongst students, up from 20% in 2002 to 27% in 2009. Bus travel has increased, with the Brookes Bus now accounting for 31% of student travel and 7% of staff travel. Car travel has decreased for staff and students: total car use for staff decreased by 9 percentage points between 2002 and 2009 to 52%, and by 11 percentage points for students from 36% to 25%.

As well as enabling effective transport management, travel plans have an important role to play in achieving strategic policy goals and business objectives of a University e.g. to support redevelopment aspirations, and to achieve aims of the carbon reduction strategy. Linking to this wider agenda can strengthen the business case for travel planning, helping to secure investment in sustainable transport solutions.

Travel plans encompass activities that may historically have been managed through different departments across the University, with policies that have evolved in an ad-hoc and reactive manner. To maximise effectiveness of any travel plan, it is essential that a strategic but flexible approach is taken, with strong links and collaborative working between all those involved, including external stakeholders.
