Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team

Promoting cycling in Glasgow

Promoting cycling in Glasgow

GUEST (Glasgow University Environmental Sustainability Team) is a ten week long pilot scheme currently employing students, part time, to inform upon and improve environmental practice of the University.

The students have a few specific targets including recycling on campus and in halls of residences. Alongside raising awareness, they have also been investigating the possibility of having a recycling hub on campus.

Another aim for the project is securing space for the Glasgow University Food Co-op and advising Hospitality Services on ethical procurement.

GUEST will also raise awareness around energy conservation projects on campus and draw attention to both past achievements and future initiatives.

The team have also prioritised a bicycle promotion campaign and are securing funding for bicycle hire vouchers, maintenance workshops and cycling proficiency classes. This will drive forward existing plans for a campus wide bicycle hire scheme.

In order to secure direct influence over wider University policy and projects, the team have representation on the University’s Carbon Management Committee and have developed a network with our Green Champions, who will continue to foster the culture of sustainability across both student and staff populations once the project has finished.

At the end of the project GUEST will submit a written report to a member of the University’s Senior Management Group with specific recommendations for future University policy.

GUEST have created a blog to inform people about their actions and act as an environmental hub advising staff and students of sustainable living and Glasgow recycling practices.
