Their proudest green achievement this year
Building Energy Efficiency
UCA’s proudest Green Achievement in 2011-12 has been the completion of a new teaching block at UCA Epsom.
The new, three-storey 1900m² building has been built to meet BREEAM excellent standard and was among the first in the UK to be assessed using the BREEAM Higher Education methodology.
The building features:
Solar photovoltaic and solar thermal arrays
Low energy rated air handling units with heat recovery
Rainwater harvesting and a grey water system
A brown roof to which will encourage biodiversity and aid rainwater attenuation
Natural ventilation and high insulation levels make the building highly energy efficient. It is expected to use 60% less energy than a notional building of the same size (Building Regs Part L, BER v TER). The building is expected to produce 20% of its electricity from renewable sources.
