Manchester Universities join nationwide protest against 'slave labour' conditions in Topshop's supply chain
As described by Toby Brett, student at Manchester University
We went to Topshop, set up the banner and handed out flyers and got petitions signed before security turned up and kicked us out.
Some people stayed behind and flyered a bit more at Topshop whilst others set up the banner outside the Arndale Centre and got more petitions signed. 400 flyers were handed out.
My favourite photo is the one of the comedy store manager in the fur hat who tried to explain that Topshop did not use sweatshops because he had seen the factories. However upon listing the countries he had visited he forgot to mention Mauritius, where workers who were shipped in from India and Sri Lanka are forced to work up to 17 hours a day in terrible conditions for only 22p per hour.
See other Topshop actions in Oxford, London and Edinburgh.
There were many more actions all around the country. email Jim yours and we’ll put it on the site.
