Universities Uncovered Tweetathon
Use the week of Twitter action to reveal the truth about YOUR university's policy on sweatshop labour.
The Week of Naked Action in March did a great job of revealing the issue of ethical procurement at Universities. Loads of People & Planet groups also managed to use the buzz created by their naked antics to get hundreds of fellow students to sign petitions pressuring their universities to join the Worker Rights Consortium.
But that was just the beginning.
Now we want to see university Vice Chancellors (VCs) committing themselves to supporting students and staff in promoting human rights through university procurement.
We want to maintain the public pressure being put on VCs until they make this commitment. This is where the Universities Uncovered Tweetathon comes in. Throughout the week beginning the 10th May we are asking student to flood their Twitter and Facebook accounts with updates shaming their university’s failure to ensure they uphold workers human rights.
Step 1: Get in touch with your VC and ask them a question focusing on garment procurement, e.g. Can you guarantee that all the products purchased by the university and SU have been made by companies who respect the rights of workers set out by international human rights laws?
Step 2: Make a short snappy quote out of their response.
Step 3: Finally, turn that soundbite into a Tweet or Facebook status and spread the word about your university’s attitude to upholding human rights in the garment industry.
Step 4: To give the outraged people who see your Tweet/Facebook status the chance to make some real change include a link to the petition on the People & Planet website at www.peopleandplanet.org/buyright/universities_uncovered, where students can ask their uni to join the WRC.
