Tweetathon a Huge Success
Students across the UK shame their universities in the Universities Uncovered Tweetathon.
Over the course of the week students at universities across Britain used Twitter and Facebook to put their Vice Chancellors on the spot about what their university does to guarantee worker rights in their supply chains. They also showed the world that students do care where their clothes come from.
Twitter was flooded with tweets like the one from ChaMilswest from UWE who says “Our university can end human rights abuse. Ask them to do it.”
The aim of the Tweetathon was to raise awareness on campus about People & Planet’s Buy Right campaign, which aims to defend human rights throughout university supply chains. And it worked, with hundreds of students signing our online petition asking their university to join the Worker Rights Consortium, an independent labour rights monitoring organisation.
All of the incredible campaigning being done by People & Planet groups is leading to real change with both the University of Birmingham and UEA both passing WRC motions and students at Durham considering putting forward a referendum on the issue.
Visit the WRC section on the Buy Right web pages to find out how to get your university to commit to upholding workers rights.
