After some hard campaigning the People & Planet group in Durham have a lot to be proud of. The group have successfully passed a motion to mandate their student union’s Trustee Board to switch funds from HSBC to a bank that is deemed ethically appropriate.
Students carried out research to prove HSBC’s involvement in the tar sands and eventually the group passed a motion to:
- Call upon the Durham Students Union(DSU) to explore alternative, ethical banking options.
- To mandate the DSU President to contact HSBC expressing our concern over their funding of tar sand extraction
- To call on the DSU Trustee Board to switch funds from HSBC to a bank that is deemed ethically appropriate
The group also put together a petition for students to sign on campus and held film screenings of Taking On Tarmageddon to raise awareness of their campaign.
