Age: 18
School/university: Arthur Mellows Village College, Glinton (nr Peterborough)
What are you studying? A2 levels: Psychology, Sociology, English Literature and General Studies.
What inspired you to start campaigning? I’d heard lots about Fairtrade from various places, adverts etc but the visit we had from People & Planet made me realise that we could do something at AMVC!
Describe your most memorable P&P experience: Fairtrade hand painting- our Fairtrade fortnight event! It took a lot of planning and organising, it bought people together and was a lot of fun! The banner is made of Fairtrade cotton and people from all year groups, the 6th form and staff all mucked in painting their hands and printing their support for Fairtrade. The banner will be displayed in school soon for everyone to see.
How did you first hear about P&P? I first heard about P&P when we had a workshop, way back in year 12!
What’s the best thing about being involved in a P&P group? The best thing about being in a P&P group is knowing that you’re doing something really worthwhile and having a good giggle whilst we do it!
With many commentators suggesting that apathy is rife amongst young people, what can be done to engage young people in the campaign for social justice? Firstly I think I disagree with those commentators! In order to engage even more young people I think education is really key- but in an active way; young people need to be given opportunities to explore issues, relate them to the bigger picture and realise that their decisions and actions really do count and can impact in many ways.
What do you think is the most pressing issue in the UK today? I think that’s an ambiguous question! The most pressing issue ‘in’ the UK may actually be having far more wide-reaching impacts. I’m currently doing a course in HIV/AIDS, so that issue is very important to me at the moment; as a member of a Fairtrade group trade is also a big issue- so much can be done- poverty really can be made history!

Where would you most like to visit? It’s not very adventurous, but right now I really want to visit a farm, feed the lambs and hold little baby chickens!
