Rich Poor Dinner

LSE P&P rich and poor diners at their hunger banquet 2005

An event where only a few lucky people get to eat a proper meal. The others leave feeling hungry!

A ‘Rich Poor Dinner’ or ‘Hunger Banquet’ is a really simple event that not only raises a bit of cash, but gets people thinking about global inequalities

How it works:

  • Choose a date and venue for your banquet and send out some invites: Have it at someone’s house or book a room at your uni, college or school, then share out some cooking responsibilities amongst yourselves to cut costs and time,
  • Charge everyone the same amount at entry (£5 is reasonable for a ‘decent’ meal), and ask them to pull ‘lots’ to decide what kind of meal they will recieve,
  • 20% will end up with the ‘golden ticket’- they get a lavish 3 course meal,
  • The remaining 80% get a simple meal of rice and water, and have to sit on the floor to eat!

Unfair isnt it?

Some examples where the ‘Hunger Banquet’ has worked well:

LSE People & Planet held a hunger banquet in November 2005, followed by a video showing and party.

The Sheffield ”Rice for Dinner’ event in June 2005 ended up feeding hundreds of people in the city centre with free rice and curry, together with stalls, speakers and singers for entertainment during the day.
