Manchester Met gobsmack their Vice chancellor with Go Green!
Man Met P&P stunned their Vice chancellor at recent meeting when they presented over 1000 signatures of student support for the Go Green campaign.
Go Green leaf petitions appear around MMU campus
The group only formed about 5 months ago and have already had a huge success with their Go Green campaign.
Over the past few months the group have been running weekly stalls to collect Go Green petitions and they’ve organised a survey in halls of residence about students’ contribution to recycling and their energy and water usage. They recently published an article in the student newsletter and have also been having regular meetings with the current Energy Manager, who has been key in helping with the campaign.
Their exciting campaign reached critical point last week when they finally met with their Vice Chancellor after writing letters asking him to meet the four main Go Green demands.
May MacKeith from the group went along and was met with support and enthusiasm from the VC who has already committed MMU to joining the new Carbon Trust project. She told P&P:
He’s given us the go ahead and agreed to getting a new environmental manager.
Their VC Professor John Brookes was very keen for the campaign to retain its student led focus. The P&P group are now putting together a Go Green motion to put through Student Union council. They’ve also been given a new draft environmental policy committing the university to serious environmental improvements over the next 5 years.
The key now will be keeping up the pressure and making sure that promises are followed through. To ensure that the Go Green demands are met as soon as possible Manchester Met P&P are planning a big event with speakers and a party to kick off next term and are hoping to get lots of new members interested with their colourful campaigning.
