The week was jam packed with events, activities, film screenings, debates and talks raising awareness on a raft of vital global concerns. Having done weeks of planning, preparation and promotion, according to group member and key organiser Ben West, the week was a “rip-roaring success!”

Each day focused on a different topic, with Day One shining the spotlight on Climate Change and the ever more urgent need to tackle this potentially catastrophic problem. The events kicked off with a thought for the day- setting the theme for the school and was followed up with debates and info sessions. The first day of the week was a screening of the brilliant documentary film looking at the problems of big business, The Corporation.

Day Two tackled the AIDS crisis which is affecting millions and millions of people across Africa, South America, Asia and Eastern Europe. The urgency of this problem was identified through information films, discussions and an assembly.

Day Three turned the eyes of the school to Trade Justice with a giant Fair Trade vending machine grabbing the attention of the pupils, teachers and the Southern Daily Echo! This day was rounded off with a screening of the 2nd part of The Corporation, which shows how uncontrolled, unaccountable corporations can devastate communities and the environment.

The fourth day aimed to concentrate minds on the frightening trade in arms across the globe. Mostly originating from Europe and the USA, the international arms trade supplies guns and grenades to some of the most volatile, impoverished regions on the planet. A spoof arms stunt and information boards around the school highlighted some of the important facts surrounding this issue.

The final day of the week stopped looking at how big the problems were and started asking how every one of us can do something to tackle them. Do Something Day was all about how the students at KES can get involved and make a difference in the lives of vulnerable people across the globe, and determine the future of our planet.

Phew! A truely incredible achievement by all the P&Pers in KES, so a big congratulations to you all!
