During an excellent meeting Aberystwyth Uni P&P group managed to get Mark Williams full support for the Climate Bill and his commitment to writing to Tony Blair and David Miliband.
Aberystwyth People and Planet coordinator Nick Chan said: “We are delighted that our MP supports the campaign and will be adding his voice to the national push for stronger and more ambitious action by the Government on climate change.
“Climate change is the biggest challenge that humanity faces, not least for the students and young people who will grow up amidst it. We need, and look for, stronger leadership and signals from the Government on facing up to the challenge. We want a strong Climate Bill that recognizes the gravity of the situation and takes the necessary steps towards a low-carbon future”.
Tom Marshall, a People and Planet member, added after the meeting: “Meeting our local MP was a perceptive experience. I’m glad that he shared our concerns and that he had a strong grip on the local permutations of the climate change problem”.
Another People and Planet member present, Mervyn Tucker, remarked: “I thought that he [Mark Williams] appreciated the far-reaching nature of the climate change crisis, not only its immediate impacts, but also on those that will follow into all sectors of the economy and society”.
Other Uni groups that have lobbied their MP’s on the Climate Bill include: Sheffield, Hull, Cambridge, Cardiff and Oxford Brookes
