Small Group - BIG Impact

World AIDS Day at Northampton Uni had it all: raising awareness with fantastic talks and a photo exhibition, an MP debate, and taking action with lobbying and signing action cards.

Perrie from the Northampton Uni P&P group reports:

The People & Planet Group at the University of Northampton may be small, with only three key members and a few representatives of other societies, but that didn’t stop their World AIDS Day being a great success.

They organised an MP debate, featuring talks by People & Planet, World Vision, the university´s LGBT and Unicef societies, which attracted students and public alike. Local MP Sally Keeble, who took part in the debate, was challenged on the government´s actions on the 2010 promise of treatment for all.

After the debate Sally Keeble was presented with two giant pill boxes full of signed Treat AIDS Now action cards, collected by the Northampton P&P group. Visibly impressed, Sally agreed to sign the EDM on access to treatment.

As the managers of the Student Union pointed out - it was impressive to finally see students on the campus arrange an event that didn´t involve drinking!

The event was organised by Perri Oldfield and Amy Bruce with help from Paul Williams, Steven Colhourn, Ellie McGee and Beth Fleetwood.
