In the lead up to Christmas, Cardiff University P&P collected over 2500 signatures for their Go Green petition by holding stalls in their Students’ Union building and at student nights. They raised awareness about the poor environmental performance of their university - including visual stunts bicycling around the city dressed in green, and writing the word ‘GO’ with their bodies whilst handing out leaflets in front of their Students’ Union building.

John Cowie, President of the group wrote:

“A select hardcore group of P&Pers showed up to lie on the floor outside the Union, despite the miserable weather (hence why we only had enough people to spell out GO)! We got quite a bit of publicity, and managed to get onto the front page of the Union paper which was cool.”

The group will present the petition to their Vice Chancellor, when he finally agrees to a meeting, asking for the four key Go Green demands to be addressed as soon as possible. Of the 56 universities reviewed in P&P’s Going Green table, only four Universities have fewer environmental provisions than Cardiff.

John Cowie, said:

“There is no reason for the Vice Chancellor to refuse to Go Green. It will save the University money by cutting energy and resource costs.”

Emma Hughes, head of the Go Green campaign and Management Committee member added:

“We´re the generation that will suffer the consequences. If ordinary people like students don´t care about the environment, how can we expect governments to care? We have a 15-year time frame to make a difference before it´s too late.”

If their requests are ignored, Cardiff P&P intend to hold demonstrations and step up even more pressure on the University through the media and local council.
