P&P campaigner profile: Ayah Alzayat
Every fortnight People & Planet profiles an individual campaigner, in order for us to celebrate and highlight what P&Pers are doing. If you think one of your friends should be displayed on this page then get in touch with us. This fortnight's offering is a 6th form member of the P&P network...
Ayah Alzayat, member of Ealing and West London College P&P group
Name: Ayah Alzayat
Age: 17
College: Ealing and West London College
What are you studying? A levels in French, English Literature and Sociology
When did you get involved with P&P? September 2005
How did you get involved? I was introduced to the idea by our media teacher, Dave Howley, who asked all those interested in joining P&P to talk to him.
Who else is in your P&P group? A variety of students from different courses and backgrounds all with a shared concern for global issues.
How does your group spread its message? We have designed and implemented a website aiming to raise awareness and encourage students to join our organisation to make the world a better place. We want anyone who is interested to join us even if they are not experts on world issues.
Why are you interested in Fairtrade? Fairtrade is not about charity, but is a growing international movement which aims to give a fair deal to marginalised ‘third world’ producers. Millions of families in developing countries don’t get a fair share of the wealth created by their own skill and effort and the resources of their land which is largely because of the way trade is controlled by rich and powerful countries. Fairtrade aims to change the rules of world trade which are unjust and a major cause of continuing world poverty and replace them by a more humane system.
