The bar at the fundraising Celiidh
Anna Kirk from Queen Elizabeth School in Hexham reports:
Last week our school held a ceilidh. We have a variety of school and local ceilidh bands and it seemed a good opportunity for both the Human Rights group and Fair Trade group to get involved.
Both groups organised the whole thing, producing tickets, a raffle, a bar and snacks, and of course the music and caller to enable all the dancing!
The bar consisted of purely fairly traded wines, beer and juice, and all nibbles were Fairtrade also. Everything went down well, what with the punters developing a thirst dancing!
Promotion of Fairtrade products, all bought locally, was the aim, and many people actually asked where they could buy it and said they would definitely buy some in the future.
Altogether, over £300 was raised, with the proceeds going, in accordance with the Human Rights group, to the Medical Foundation which cares for victims of torture.
A success for both groups, and of course the public! We now hope to concentrate on getting more Fairtrade goods in the canteen. We also hope to get a petition circulating in school, start up coffee orders amongst the teachers, and take action for Fairtrade fortnight.
