Bullers Wood P&P have taken their concerns about Climate Change to Tony Blair, as well as bringing about real change at their school

Hannah Smith of Bullers Wood P&P group reports:

After collecting ideas from a People & Planet workshop on climate change last year, our P&P group wrote a letter to the headteacher with suggestions for environmental improvements in school. As a result of our meetings with senior staff, Bullers Wood is now:

  • switching to energy efficient lightbulbs in two main buildings
  • ensuring computers are turned off overnight
  • providing more recycling bins
  • trialling e-mail communication with parents of next September’s intake
  • ordering an energy survey by the Carbon Trust
  • displaying an Environmental Code of Conduct in all classrooms

Two other P&P members and I are presenting assemblies all next week on climate change, particularly on the results of our meeting with the Headmistress and other senior staff about environmental proposals in our school. The assembly also serves as the launch of our homegrown Environmental Code of Conduct, which we drafted in meetings with senior staff.

One student commented: “What’s most exciting is that both staff and students can be involved in stopping climate change - from the big leaps like installing hundreds of lightbulbs, to remembering to write on both sides of a sheet of paper.”
