Free Burma - Target Total Oil
Total Oil, by investing in Burma, is helping to prop up a regime charged by the United Nations with a "crime against humanity". Make your voice heard and tell Total to stop supporting Burma.
In the last few weeks, tens of thousands of Burmese people have taken to the streets to protest against their brutal military government. The dictatorship has begun a violent crackdown — in 1988 they massacred thousands of civilians. The Burmese people urgently need our solidarity. If the world stands up and supports their struggle, this time they could win.
Ten years ago, People & Planet successfully led a global campaign to stop Pepsi operating in Burma.
People & Planet are now targeting Total Oil — one of the Burmese regime’s key foreign investors. Total, by investing in Burma, is helping to prop up a regime charged by the United Nations with a “crime against humanity” for its systematic abuses of human rights, and internationally condemned for refusing to transfer power to the legally elected government of the country.
According to the BBC, Total “… is a major investor in Burma through its gas pipeline project in Yadana, which is a joint venture with the junta. Total has been embroiled in a series of court cases over forced labour and other human rights abuses.”

I am writing about your company’s involvement in Burma. For many years Total Oil has worked with Burma’s brutal military dictatorship. By working so closely with the dictatorship, Total is supporting a regime that imprisons and tortures political opponents, uses forced labour and uses rape as a weapon of war in its persecution of ethnic minorities. By its engagement in Burma, Total is actively supporting the suppression of democracy and bringing disrepute on itself.
It is not too late to change. I urge Total to stop supporting Burma’s military dictatorship and its long term and systematic violations of human rights.
Burma’s legally elected government and other democratic leaders have asked companies not to invest in Burma. Please support the Burmese people, rather than helping the junta which continues to exploit and oppress them. Please end Total’s business partnership with Burma’s military dictatorship and pull out of Burma now.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Write
