Progress on outcomes from The Forum 2007
The Forum is People & Planet’s annual democratic event - a weekend where P&P students from around the country come together and set the direction for our organisation and work.
This year’s Forum took place on 16-18 March in Nottingham. Below is a table showing the session outcomes and how far we have got in implementing them. The table will be updated with the remaining outcomes and progress shortly.
Don’t forget that it’ll soon be your chance to set the agenda for The Forum 2008. The website for The Forum 2008 will be launched on Friday 19 October.
Your ideas for what should be on the agenda for The Forum are eagerly awaited so get thinking in your groups about what you’d like to see discussed. You will be able to send them to us from next week and the deadline for proposals is 26 November.

Next steps |
Progress |
|---|---|---|
Economic Justice campaigning in universities. |
Develop cotton campaign with consultation and development during the cotton campaign sessions at the Summer Gathering. |
Completed. Used the online forum and sessions at the Summer Gathering to consult the network on campaign development. See the redress fashion webpages. |
Climate campaigning in schools and colleges. |
To use recommendations from the sessions to plan new campaign, workshops and materials. |
It’s done! Recommendations from the sessions were used in developing the new campaign, workshops and materials. A new website is on the way and should be online soon. |
Democracy. |
Management Committee to take the lead on implementing and responding to recommendations made by the Forum. |
Tom, Ben and Harry on the Management Committee have formed a Democracy Task Force (watch this space for their first report). There have been a lot of improvements in Management Committee communications since the Forum. Check out the new, improved Management Committee webpages and find out more about what their latest meetings. |
Increasing connections between university and sixth form. |
As a pilot project for 2007/08, to recruit university student mentors for sixth form groups. |
Mentoring scheme planned and recruitment ongoing. |
More publicity about regional events and training workshops, especially targeting sixth form students; make these genuine joint events, rather than than university events that sixth formers attend. |
Joint sixth form and university regional events going ahead. |
|
Implementing a system to let university groups know about new sixth form groups in their area and vice versa; twinning university and sixth form groups. |
Map of university and sixth form groups available for those on outreach visits to increase the possibilities of interaction. |
|
Fundraising and funding. |
Set up an online funding and fundraising working group, to include those who expressed an interest in joining one at the Forum and to be promoted widely amongst the network. |
The new Peer to Peer fundraising volunteers will play a key role in promoting and helping to run this group so it should get off the ground after Shared Planet 2007. |
Work with student MC members to recruit, train and support a team of peer-to-peer fundraiser volunteers. |
This is happening now. Ten Peer to Peer fundraisers (should we receive enough applications) will come to a training day on 27th October. The new volunteer position will work in much the same way as our other voluntary posts (with an agreement, action plan, regional emphasis, Guide/volunteer pack, support from the Support Office etc) and the idea is that the dimensions of the role will be developed in conjucntion with the volunteers, as they feed back to us what groups would find most useful in terms of support. They’ll play a role promoting fundraising messages at Shared Planet (including getting people to sign up to the Fan Club) and at the Forum. They will also contribute to the development of a Network Fundraising long-term strategy, part of which will be to produce and pilot a range of fundraising resources for both the university and sixth form networks. This is all very much at the proposal stage at the moment. |
|
Provide thorough funding and fundraising training to all new Management Committee members. |
There was a session in the weekend-long MC training on P&P’s finances and I ran a session on Network Fundraising, the Fan Club, and the strategy we have in place so far. Kate Hand has remained in post as the MC member with a focus on Fundraising. The remaining student members decided that they would rather focus on other areas in the role (campaigns and outreach) and saw fundraising as a more holistic thing that they should all be aware of. |
