Proposal from Forum session |
How it’s been put into practice |
|---|---|
Make reports from universities with Fairtrade status and case studies available to those who are still working on gaining status |
The new Action Guide and web pages include new case studies. Silje, the Fairtrade intern, is currently working on developing this resource. |
More counter arguments for discussions with caterers and other authorities |

Using NUSSL |
P&P works closely with NUS Services Limited. We are a key partner in their Sound Impact Awards, and NUSSL facilitated a workshop on these awards at Shared Planet 06. They are working with us on the Fairtrade Universities conference and are sending the Fairtrade Action Guide to every student union in the country. |
Using extra resources on the priorities The Forum identified for expanding the trade campaign |
Trade Justice - The P&P website featured some information on the Company Law Reform bill earlier this year, and some groups lobbied their MPs on this. Promoting alternatives to supermarkets - P&P produced a mini-briefing on supermarket pricing of bananas, and issues of workers’ rights within the supply chain which can be found here. Looking at other Fairtrade/ethical/sweat-free products on campus and Workers rights and sweatshop campaign - The new Fairtrade action guide uses cotton as a case-study. In includes case-studies on getting Fairtrade cotton on campus, and looks at workers’ rights as a way of retaining and building on Fairtrade status. |
Continuing discussion |
The network owned and runweb forum has several threads related to Fairtrade. The support office has copies of the New Internationalist issue on ethical consumerism available to send to groups. These can be used as a tool to spark debate in your group. In the new year, the P&P website will host a series of mini-debates around the future of Fairtrade. |
What remains to be done?
- More research on cost. This is a big task and has not been prioritised for urgent work.
What plans have changed?
- More materials to raise awareness. Due to our limited budget, this was not prioritised. It was hoped that groups would be able to find awareness-raising materials through other organisations.
