Go Green

Proposal from Forum session

How it’s been put into practice

Incorporating suggestions into the revised campaign pack

A new pack was produced and sent out in September 2006. There are also new resources on the Go Green webpages. These include a Going Green table, Action Profiles of all groups running the campaign with downloadable photos, SU motions, petitions etc.

Investigate the possibility of a national ask to promote the aims of the Go Green campaign

Research was undertaken in May 2006. P&P contacted Environment Managers, EAUC, Universities UK, Carbon Trust and other people in the sector. The main conclusions were that bottom-up pressure would be most effective. We therefore haven’t developed a national ask, although we are planning to develop the Going Green table to put pressure on VCs and to build competition between universities - maybe with national media coverage.

Sixth Form Climate Change workshop

Proposal from Forum session

How it’s been put into practice

Incorporate suggestions into the workshop

The workshop was launched in September 2006. It emphasises the human aspects of climate change and the key action suggested for sixth formers is the pledge. This is a personal action connected to political pressure, in line with the consultation session that recommended personal lifestyle action as a good initial action for sixth formers. See our sixth form web pages for details of our work with sixth formers.

‘Financing Fossil Fuels’ — Ditch Dirty Development

Proposal from Forum session

How it’s been put into practice

A dual emphasis on the positive and negative aspects of the campaign

The campaign was launched at Shared Planet 06 and both positive solutions and negative problems with energy funding are included in the campaign.

Questions of who we target

The current campaign focus is on DfID. The office proposed discussing moving onto private banks as a second campaign target for the agenda of The Forum 07. While this was not prioritised by the Management Committee for The Forum agenda, the office is working with the Management Committee to find other ways to consult the network about the Ditch Dirty Development campaign.

Focus sessions with different groups in the network to get input on campaign materials and tactics

One focus session was held at Reading Uni in summer term 2006, which brainstormed ideas for actions.

Keeping the network involved in choosing a name for the campaign

Shortlisted ideas for names were taken to Summer Gathering, where the name ‘Ditch Dirty Development’ was chosen.

What plans have changed?

  • In the ‘Financing Fossil Fuels’ session, it was highlighted that it would be good to have ways to involve the network in campaign decisions between events. This has been implemented on an ad hoc basis (e.g. a focus group in Reading Uni and a session at the Summer Gathering). It could however be addressed again in the democracy session at The Forum 07.

  • The Go Green campaign pack has not been tailored to specific groups. This would add massively to the campaigns team workload, but groups can email to request specific materials.

  • The resources to print a new Go Green newsletter, stickers or leaflets have not been available.
