Scarlett de Courcier

How old are you? 19

Where are you studying? Heythrop College, University of London

What are you studying? Philosophy and Psychology

What inspired you to start campaigning? A love of the environment and the inspirational attitudes of various people around me.

Describe your most memorable P&P experience. I was invited to Anita Roddick’s memorial service, where many people did presentations about her life and the work in which she was involved. I found it an inspiration to know that such a successful businesswoman also made time to use her skills to help the environment and those less fortunate than her.

How did you first hear about P&P? Through a teacher at school.

What’s the best thing about being involved in a P&P group? The bond that springs up between members is a reward in itself, and the feeling that you’re all working together to care for the environment and trying to put back some of what humans have stripped from the world.

With many commentators suggesting that apathy is rife amongst young people, what can be done to engage young people in the campaign for social justice? I think a large part of the reason why young people feel apathetic is that they don’t think they can really make a difference. If they are part of a group where they can see some of the effects of what they’re doing, and they know that there are other groups around the country all striving for similar goals, then they are more likely to fully engage with what they’re doing and really try to work hard to achieve a better world.

What was the last film you watched? Rent

Where would you most like to visit? Ploermel in Brittany.

What are your ambitions for the future? To think deeply and live fully.
