Roehampton People & Planet group worked their socks off in the lead up to World AIDS Day, on Saturday 1 December, to raise awareness of the 6,000 people that die of AIDS every day, and increase pressure on the government to take action to halt the crisis. The group ran a stall selling badges and ribbons, and collected signatures for their petition, as well as lobbying their local MP to support calls for the government to meet its promise to provide universal access to treatment for AIDS by 2010.
All the hard work paid off as they collected £100 for People & Planet, and over 700 signatures of support for the campaign. Members of the group also attended the mass lobby of Parliament on Thursday 29 November, which saw plenty of MPs, including International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander, meet with campaigners from People & Planet and other organisations. On the day, Roehampton’s impressive petition paid off as they met their local MP, Justine Greening, who pledged her support for the campaign.
Lewis Bassett, this year’s President of Roehampton People & Planet said: “I think there was a lot of enthusiasm for this campaign on campus. The campaign can be more complex to explain than you would like, but ultimately it comes down to the government acting seriously on their promise. We know what they need to do. They need to do it. Now we have our MP’s support we just have to sustain the pressure.”
If you fancy taking a leaf out of the Roehampton group’s book and getting involved in the campaign, why not take action by emailing DfID now.
