Fairtrade Fortnight at The Coleshill School
Suzy Windridge from the Coleshill People & Planet group reports back on Fairtrade Fortnignt at her school.
Coleshill School Fairtrade Stall and Paoster
A couple of weeks before Fairtrade Fortnight, I approached the county catering manager about stocking Fairtrade orange juice. I had planned to carry out a school survey to show their support, but this wasn’t necessary as I received a message back saying that they were going to start selling Fairtrade orange juice in the canteen straight away!
We had a Fairtrade tuckshop for the whole school, selling various Divine chocolate bars, Dubble bars, brownies, orange juice, Fairbreak bars, Geobars, flapjacks and chocolate chip cookies. Some of us made peanut butter cookies and chocolate chip muffins using Fairtrade ingredients. We sold over £100 worth of stock just in one break-time!
Coleshill School Fairtrade Assembly

I took the main school assemblies in the second week of Fairtrade Fortnight. Although talking to 360 children sounds a bit daunting, I felt a duty to do the assemblies as farmers in the developing world deserve justice. I talked about how Fairtrade works, its benefits and how we can support it.
We ran a poster competition for year seven and the winner received a supply of Fairtrade chocolate! I also wrote an article for the school newsletter in order to raise awareness about Fairtrade. A lot of the pupils and students already knew about Fairtrade as we had taken assemblies earlier this year and held a whole school tuckshop. We run a Fairtrade tuckshop in Sixth Form every break-time and have had workers from People and Planet come in to take sessions.
Let’s hope next year is just as successful!
