St. Brendan's College get Fairtrade Fabulous

Students at St. Brendan's RC Sixth Form College do some fabulous campaigning around fairtrade fortnight.

The P&P group at St. Brendan’s are well on their way to making their college fairtrade.

St. Brendan’s are set to revolutionise their college. Right now they are putting together an application for Fairtrade status after their fantastically successful campaigning around Fairtrade fortnight.

There has been a group campaigning on Fairtrade at the school for a while, but this year things are really happening. The group used Valentines day to raise awareness, by selling Fairtrade roses to love-struck students around the college canteen. The roses were all labelled as Fairtrade. Students went mad for them and they sold out very quickly.

One lunch time the students put on an entire concert, with lots of Fairtrade tasters. They approached supermarkets for Fairtrade samples and managed to get some goodies from the Co-op. This was no-where enough for the hundreds of students however, so the group delved into their budget to provide Fairtrade food for all. Teacher Anne Donaghey’s office “was full of chocolate, cakes and biscuits.”

College bands kept the munching students entertained. However, St. Brendan’s P&P were not happy with just giving out free food and music. They used a projected slide-show about Fairtrade as the back-drop to the bands, getting the message across in a way no-one could ignore. The slide-show also celebrated the campaigning of the group and of other students who had previously campaigned for Fairtrade at the college.

The students had a great time, but St. Brendan’s P&P realised that they needed more to make Fairtrade an integral part of their college into the future. They wrote a policy which went to the governors for approval — and it was passed!

Well done St. Brendan’s, some awesome campaigning.

What’s Next?

Next the group plan to do some fundraising and may attend the South West Regional Event to get to know other keen sixth form P&Pers.
