Is Gordon Brown a fossil fool?

People & Planet take part in Fossil Fools Day, protest over the governments plans to new coal power plans. 1st of April action starts with a 11am briefing, 11:45 am Press call, 2pm Lobby of Parliament.

Coal power: Brown's Legacy?

The Climate Change Bill and coal do not mix.

People & Planet are building a coal power station complete with 12ft cooling towers in Parliament Square and burning a mock Climate Change Bill to protest against the Government’s plans to build eight new coal-fired power stations.

Approving a programme of new coal-fired power stations, beginning with Kingsnorth in Kent, will ensure the UK’s Climate Change Bill goes up in smoke, along with the UK’s international leadership on climate change.

People & Planet believes that this Government must make energy choices that will see the UK’s carbon emissions reduced by at least 80% by 2050 to keep below a two degrees Centigrade rise. The eight new coal-fired power stations would account for over half of the UK’s emissions in the new Climate Change Bill.

People & Planet is calling for a full Public Inquiry into the Kingsnorth proposal in order that the negative climate impacts of such a move are fully exposed.

We are also calling for a moratorium on any new coal-fired power stations until the technology to capture and store the carbon they release is fully operational and fitted.

The Government claims that it will be possible to fit carbon capture technology to Kingsnorth at a later date. There is currently not a single coal power station anywhere in the world that uses this technology. By IPCC estimates, carbon capture and storage (CCS) will only be realistically deployed around the world in the second half of the century. This leaves at least forty years of dirty new coal emissions.

The action is part of Fossil Fool’s Day, a global day of action to illustrate the short-sighted idiocy in continuing to extract and burn fossil fuels. After the protest, students from all across the UK have organised a lobby of Parliament on this issue to bring it to the attention of their MPs.
