Energy company E.On has today been warned of mass opposition to new coal-fired power stations unless their emissions can be safely stored.

People & Planet’s Director, Ian Leggett, and other leaders from Stop Climate Chaos (SCC) sailed on the iconic Greenpeace ship, the Rainbow Warrior, to E.On’s Kingsnorth base to deliver a declaration against coal-powered developments because of their huge emissions and the threat more dirty coal-fired power stations pose to climate change.

The declaration was presented on behalf of all SCC members. It said: “Four million strong, we say no to dirty coal power stations, and yes to a clean green renewable energy future.”

The initiative is part of a huge campaign to force governments to step up their action against climate change and the Kingsnorth proposal has come to symbolise the contest between two visions of energy production. One is carbon-intensive and relies on the technologies of the last century. The other is a vision of a low carbon energy system which emphasises reducing consumption, massively improving energy efficiency and investing in renewable sources of energy.

As today’s politicians make these critical decisions, it is young people around the world who will have to live with the consequences. That’s why the People & Planet network have said it’s time for a change.
