Are we nearly there yet?
15 intrepid P&Pers cycled to Shared Planet, Birmingham in November, from as far away as Cardiff, Bangor and Nottingham. They raised a massive £1,361.
A huge thank you to the dedicated People & Planet supporters who took part in our 4th annual sponsored Cycle to Shared Planet.
Brunel’s Alex, Michael, Will, Joe (front) cycled 100 miles to Shared Planet and raised over £350.
They came from far and wide, including Cardiff, Bangor, Oxford, Nottingham, and London.
The heroic folk who braved the chilly November elements were: Nick Underwood, Joe Firth, William Armstrong, Joe Greenwood, Michael Wood, Alex Hughes, Naomi Bates, Alys Mumford, Jennie Barrett, Lucy Hiscox, Sunil Linus, Nick Chan, Una Brogan and Jonathan Watler.
Through sponsorship they raised an amazing £1,361 which will be a huge help in funding P&P’s work.
Joe Firth cycled all the way from Bangor to Birmingham and writes:
“When I first suggested cycling 125 miles to Birmingham everyone thought I was bonkers, and when I said I was going to do it in a day, I think most thought I should be sectioned and removed from society altogether. To be honest, there was so much else happening at university that it was only really the night before that the enormity of my task really hit home. I was also woefully unprepared, my toolkit consisted of a pump and an allen key, so if anything more than a puncture was inflicted on my bike I would be, ahem, rather screwed.
Fortunately, those people and planeters must have had their fingers crossed as I did, in fact, only get a puncture (ok well I got two but still not too bad going). I must admit it was certainly a relief getting to (and finding) Birmingham University, however the sense of achievement vastly outweighed the aches and pains. Although I’m reasonably fit, I’m certainly no athlete and would hazard that with a little positive thinking anyone could do a challenge of some sorts. I think the bicycle is a brilliant form of transport and hopefully my ride shows it’s not just useful for short distances. Also, doing something barmy for sponsorship really is a win-win situation. People & Planet get some much needed funds, and despite initially seeming like shooting yourself in the foot, a physical challenge really is good fun.”
William Armstrong, one of the 4 brave Brunel crew writes about their adventures:
“The cycle from Brunel university to Shared Planet was inspirational. We decided it would be a good way for a couple of the members to loose a bit of weight while raising money for P&P, who have been very helpful and supportive in our environmental campaigning. We managed to raise over £350; however the weight was put back on as soon as we got back to uni. All in all it was an enjoyable couple of days cycling, even with the added adventure of sideways raining, and a great weekend of fantastic events and opportunities for meeting friendly and enthusiastic like-minded people. See you next year at SP.”
Thanks also to Jenni Liberty, Volunteer Extraordinaire, who organised the cycle from our Oxford Office.
